Tea has more to do with fashion than you’d expect. Just as the fashion world goes through seasons, featuring new designers and new trends, the tea world does the same. Teas are unique in their flavors, mouth feels and brewing methods; each tea has their own personality. Influenced by various San Francisco based tea people, who are all trendsetters themselves, we decided to showcase the parallels of the fashion and tea world and launch a lookbook. Our Spring / Summer 2016 lookbook features our top five trending tea choices for the season and highlights their distinct palates along with the people who are sipping on them right now.
To me, having the perfect cup of tea is similar to finding the perfect pair of pants; it’s versatile, it goes with everything. I like brewing Muscat at work because it’s perfect hot or cold, on its own, or with a splash of milk. It’s the right amount of caffeine with such a unique flavor from the real muscat grapes in it. Like those perfect pair of pants, it’s a refined but comforting sip. It makes me forget I’m in the office, in work clothes, and makes it feel like I am already unwinding with a glass of wine.
I started drinking Black Coil out of a collaboration Black Sands Brewery was doing with Tea People. We decided to experiment with putting the tea on nitro tap and see what would happen to the flavor. It came out with the mouth feel of a Guinness and with a flavor profile that got me hooked. Most people would assume that I’m a huge coffee drinker, with the intersection of brewing hops and brewing coffee beans, but I’ve definitely converted. Black coil is pretty badass; it’s robust and bold, and has this strong jolt of caffeine too.
I spend most of my day combining all sorts of fresh ingredients to create comfort Vietnamese food. At the same time, I’m always looking to make sure my food has a certain Northern California soul to it. Drinking a cup of Rose Black feels like it embodies the same kind of fusion. The flavor feels like the perfectly blended refreshment for a spring day; a little floral with real rose petals, that's not overpowered by a rich black tea base. Plus, it holds up great in the kitchen!
As a nurse, lifestyle coach and a trainer, I’m constantly moving. Since I spend a lot of time on the go, I’m always trying to find that perfect balance -- balancing my clients, my work and workouts, and myself. Coconut green tea is the perfect balance; it’s super refreshing and light while being the ideal amount of caffeine. It’s sweet like coconut water and anti-oxidant packed like green tea, all in one drink. My ideal is cold brewing my tea at night after a long day with clients, so I can pour it over ice and have it to sip on all day long. It's so easy!
I used to be that person who drank cup after cup of coffee throughout the day. I'm a morning person, but by the time it was night and I was done with work, I was still so wired. That's how I got into Phoenix Mountain. As an oolong, it has that immediate jolt of caffeine, but it can be brewed over and over during the work day. Plus, it has this rich peachy flavor that evolves with each steep which keeps things interesting! You can add milk and sugar or drink it straight up. Either way, brewing Phoenix Mountain all day is the perfect match for my work flow.
